Back to School VAT Holiday: What Shoppers Need to Know

August 10, 2026

As the summer winds down, parents across The Bahamas are feeling a familiar financial pinch. Between buying new uniforms, stocking up on school supplies, and making additional preparations for the school year, costs can add up quickly. However, the Government has launched its annual Back-to-School VAT Holiday, offering a much-needed break on essential items. To help with navigating these savings, Beaumont Todd, Training and Communications Director at the Department of Inland Revenue, came on Bahamas at Sunrise to break down everything you need to know about this year’s tax-free shopping period.

The VAT Holiday is a designated period of time when Value Added Tax (VAT) is not charged on specific back-to-school items. This is the sixth annual holiday, meaning it has become a staple for Bahamian families looking to save.

According to Mr. Todd, this is an opportunity for “anybody that is looking during this point in time to save some funds”. It isn’t just for parents; anyone looking to stock up on supplies can benefit. The tax holiday is running for a whole month, from August 8th to September 5th.

The VAT exemption covers a wide range of school essentials. You can save on uniforms and clothing, school supplies, technology, and other accessories needed for school.

There are also some important details to remember when it comes to this period. Firstly, there is no student ID required. If the item is on the list, the VAT is waived. As Mr. Todd confirmed, “You don’t need to have any type of identification.” Secondly, it is important to understand that the store is not discounting the price of the item; the government is waiving the VAT. This still results in significant savings compared to the retail price. Thirdly, if you find a great deal but can’t pay it for it all at once, you can utilize store layaway programs. As long as you complete the purchase by September 5th, the VAT exemption still applies. Fourthly, if you notice VAT added to your receipt by mistake, you should immediately bring it to the attention of the store owner or manager. Mr. Todd noted that if an error occurs, the store should reverse the change.

One of the key messages from the Department of Inland Revenue is the encouragement to “shop at home”. Instead of spending money on plane tickets and hotel stays to shop abroad, take advantage of the savings right here in The Bahamas.

The Department of Inland Revenue is also using this time to encourage citizens to update their contact information on their online tax system. This ensures you receive future notifications and bills, making your tax experience smoother. Mr. Todd said the Department of Inland Revenue wants to ensure the “tax experience is as easy as possible”.

The Back-to-School VAT Holiday is a fantastic opportunity to get your children (or yourself) ready for the academic year without breaking the bank. With the savings on uniforms, technology, and supplies, you can cross everything off your list while keeping money in your pocket

Don't miss out! You have until September 5th to take advantage of these tax-free savings. For a full list of items, visit the Department of Inland Revenue's website at inlinerevenue.finance.gov.bs.
