Advanced Poll Set for April 30 as Eligible Voters Urged to Apply Early

The Parliamentary Registration Department outlines who qualifies for advanced polling on April 30 and how eligible voters can apply ahead of Election Day in The Bahamas.

The Parliamentary Registration Department is preparing for advance polls scheduled for April 30, with eligible voters being urged to apply as soon as possible.

Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson said advanced polling is a key component of the electoral process, allowing specific groups to vote ahead of Election Day.

“It’s a no-sleep season,” Thompson said, describing the department’s current workload as preparations intensify.

The advanced poll was initially established to accommodate law enforcement officers and election workers but has since expanded. Thompson noted that persons aged 65 and older, election agents, and individuals who will be unable to vote on Election Day due to travel, medical reasons, or other commitments may also qualify.

To apply, individuals in The Bahamas are required to complete a K Form, while those overseas must submit a J Form. Thompson explained that applications can be submitted in person and are reviewed to determine eligibility, with some applicants receiving approval on the same day.

Forms are available at multiple locations across New Providence, including several post offices, community centres, and the department’s headquarters, in an effort to make the process more accessible to the public.

Advanced polling will take place at 12 stations in New Providence and three in Grand Bahama. A designated polling station at the University of The Bahamas will also facilitate Family Island voters who are in New Providence during the advanced poll period.

Thompson advised voters to ensure their registration details are accurate before arriving to vote, noting that casting a ballot in the wrong polling division could affect whether it is counted.

Officials are encouraging eligible voters to act quickly, as the advanced poll date approaches, to avoid last-minute delays and ensure a smooth voting process.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The 14th Annual Eleuthera Business Outlook is set for Thursday, April 16, 2026, at The Eleuthera Business Hub in Rock Sound, followed by Friday, April 17, 2026, at Valentine’s Resort. Under the theme “Strengthening Foundations for Long-Term Prosperity,” the two-day event will examine opportunities and challenges facing Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, while outlining strategies for sustainable economic growth and investment.

Thomas Sands, President of the Eleuthera Chamber of Commerce, said the island’s economy continues to show steady momentum. “In general, the economy of Eleuthera continues to see positive movement. Some of it has slowed a little after major construction projects, but overall, there is confidence that the economy is moving forward in a positive direction,” Sands said.

He added, “Sustained growth is being supported by the diversity of investments from different groups. Most of these developments are funded by groups with the resources to weather challenges—they are not relying solely on banks for financing. This is a positive sign for the island.” Sands also emphasized long-term planning, noting: “Maximizing foreign direct investment requires a strategic plan. We need to empower the backbone of the economy so that incoming investment is retained and reinvested in local communities.”

Eric Carey, President and CEO of One Consultants, who will speak on sustainable development, said tourism activity across Eleuthera remains strong. “Generally, tourism is really looking up on this island. Harbour Island and Spanish Wells are booming, whether it’s golf carts buzzing around Spanish Wells or private jets at North Eleuthera Airport,” Carey said.

He added, “Tourism impact is gradually extending south, with projects like Cotton Bay fully operational and the Disney Cruise Port in Southern Eleuthera. This growth is exciting, but infrastructure must keep pace.” Carey also noted: “We embrace development, but it must not outpace the community’s capacity.”

Ben Simmons, owner of The Other Side and Ocean View, said differences across the island chain require targeted strategies. “Eleuthera versus Harbour Island is very different. Harbour Island has benefited from a touch of fairy dust—but Eleuthera requires educating visitors about its unique opportunities,” Simmons said.

He added, “We’ve grown from 10 employees to 120 across multiple businesses. The lesson is that small, precise businesses, scaled thoughtfully, create sustainable growth,” while noting that industry collaboration remains critical to long-term success.

The first day in Rock Sound will feature a keynote address from the Hon Clay Sweeting, Minister of Works & Family Island Affairs, alongside presentations by Javier Rodriguez of Marriott International on economic opportunities and Amber Carey of Cable Bahamas on artificial intelligence and small business. The agenda will also feature first-time presenters including Prince Rahming, Bryan Glinton, Patrice Jackson, Keith Roye and Candace Fields, bringing fresh perspectives to discussions on tourism, business development, entrepreneurship, workforce challenges, infrastructure and emerging economic sectors, alongside contributions from Roger Archer of Scotiabank and other industry stakeholders.

The second day at Valentine’s Resort will feature a keynote by Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs Clay Sweeting, with a featured address from Director General of Tourism Latia Duncombe highlighting national tourism priorities. Sessions will also include presentations by Shakera Johnson of Cable Bahamas and Roger Archer of Scotiabank, along with panel discussions involving Henry Rolle, Lee Rosenjack and Jay Jay Percentie, as well as contributions from Keyron Smith of the One Eleuthera Foundation and other stakeholders focused on workforce development, infrastructure and sustaining investment across the island.

Sands said, “The pace of growth is faster than what our communities were prepared for. While there are challenges, this is a moment of tremendous opportunity for Eleuthera to plan, invest, and thrive for the long term.”

Carey added, “Tourism, development, and community must move in tandem. This is the moment to ensure sustainable, long-lasting prosperity.”

Simmons said, “By thinking strategically, acting locally, and connecting meaningfully, Eleuthera can achieve growth that benefits everyone.”

The Eleuthera Business Outlook provides a platform for networking and collaboration, positioning Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Spanish Wells for continued economic expansion. Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas Business Outlook (BBO), the country’s premier economic conference, is set for Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Baha Mar resort, with Prime Minister the Hon. Philip E. Davis, KC, scheduled to deliver the highly anticipated keynote address that is expected to set the tone for national economic discourse in a pivotal year.

Now in its 35th year, Bahamas Business Outlook will be held under the theme “Strengthening Foundations for Long-Term Prosperity,” bringing together senior government officials, business leaders, and institutional stakeholders for a full day of dialogue on economic resilience, investment, and national preparedness. With a general election looming, the Prime Minister’s presentation is expected to outline the Government’s economic record, articulate its forward-looking policy agenda, and frame the broader economic outlook as the country approaches a critical political juncture.

Organised by The Counsellors Ltd, the conference will focus on key economic and policy issues shaping The Bahamas’ medium- and long-term trajectory. Discussions are expected to examine macroeconomic conditions, fiscal stability, and government progress on economic reform, alongside strategies aimed at sustaining growth amid global uncertainty.

Tourism development and destination competitiveness will feature prominently, including conversations on strengthening Nassau Paradise Island, expanding Family Island investment, and positioning the tourism sector for long-term resilience. Financial-sector discussions will centre on fiscal discipline, corporate performance, access to capital, and the stability of the banking and insurance sectors in supporting national growth.

The programme is also expected to address housing market pressures and access to financing, with a focus on affordability, mortgage availability, and the role of financial institutions in supporting home ownership and development.

Education and workforce development will form another key pillar of the conference agenda, exploring how skills training, higher education, and human capital development align with the evolving needs of the economy. Additional discussions will examine technological innovation and the growing role of digital transformation and artificial intelligence in business operations and competitiveness.

National resilience and disaster preparedness are also expected to be highlighted, with emphasis on building a disaster-ready business community as a critical component of sustainable economic development in a climate-vulnerable region.

Organizers say the 35th Annual Bahamas Business Outlook will continue its long-standing role as a premier forum for informed, forward-looking engagement between policymakers and the private sector, as The Bahamas works to strengthen its economic foundations and chart a clear path forward.

, Kerry Fountain, Executive Director of the Bahamas Out Islands Promotion Board, highlighted Abaco’s strong tourism rebound. “In 2025, year-to-date numbers from January through July, if we compare room nights sold and room revenue to what we were doing in 2019, the room nights sold so far total about 15,237. For the same period in 2019, it was 14,600. Our room revenues for January through July this year compared to January through July 2019 are up 70 percent. So hotels are seeing slight growth in occupancy and room nights sold, but exponential growth in room revenue and that’s what we’re in business for—to make money.”

Fountain, who will moderate the tourism panel, added that while The Bahamas’ proximity to the U.S. is a major advantage, cost remains a barrier. “How do we take advantage of our proximity? We’re just 52 miles away from Florida, but the cost of getting to The Bahamas doesn’t reflect that. Proximity doesn’t equate to affordability, and we have to address that—we can’t keep kicking the can down the road. It’s not just about helping hotels make money, it’s also about helping them cut costs, reducing red tape, and rolling out more of the red carpet. Also, how do we get cruise lines—who leave the largest environmental footprint with nine to ten million passengers a year—to contribute more to government revenues? How do we use those funds to fix product issues and perhaps even reduce the cost of getting to Abaco or the other islands if you’re flying? If we address these issues, everything else we’re doing—our promotions, our sales—becomes much easier.”

Emmanuel Alexiou, owner of the Abaco Beach Resort and President of the Bahamas Out Islands Promotion Board, emphasized that profitability for island resorts is still being tested. “The revenue’s gone up tremendously, but so have the costs. So it’s not all rosy. The biggest part, of course, is the high cost of utilities, and supply is inconsistent. When people are paying such high rates—while room revenues have gone up—they expect their air conditioning to work, their Internet to be reliable, and utilities to be consistent.

“Then you add the cost of operations in general, staff productivity, service levels, insurance, and repairs, which are much more expensive than before. So the big challenge is really cost—cost of operations, cost of airlift, cost of doing business overall. And then there’s competition from Airbnbs and cruise ships. The whole boating sector brings its own pressures as well. So yes, revenues are up, but profitability remains under strain.”

Alexiou added that all tourism stakeholders should compete on a level playing field. “By that I mean all the other operators—Airbnb, cruise ships, and so on. I’m not against them. We’re all part of the tourism product. But we have to make sure they contribute their fair share of costs, and that not all of the tax and operating burden falls only on the hotels,’ he said.

Leno Corporate Services marks 15 years of success with the opening of its $40 million HQ, celebrating growth, community impact, and a commitment to excellence.

It was a night of celebration, pride, and purpose as Leno Corporate Services marked two major milestones — the grand opening of its new national headquarters, the $40 million Leno Corporate Centre, and its 15th anniversary as a premier wholly Bahamian-owned financial services firm.

The event, held on Friday, July 18th, brought together government leaders, business executives, clients, staff, and well-wishers to honour a journey that began with “little but hope and aspiration” and has grown into a symbol of national achievement.

Guests, including Prime Minister Philip Davis and Governor General Dame Cynthia “Mother” Pratt, were led on a tour of the remarkable edifice before the commencement of the proceedings.

“This is our national headquarters going forward,” said Leno founder, president, and CEO Sean K. Longley. “Fifteen years ago, Leno began as a humble but powerful vision, one rooted in determination, integrity, ambition, and the belief that a wholly Bahamian-owned firm could deliver first-class service in this country — and I could say wholeheartedly we’ve achieved that.”

The new seven-storey, 50,000-square-foot edifice, which was blessed by the Rt. Rev. Laish Boyd, Anglican Bishop of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, was designed, engineered, and constructed by Bahamian professionals. “We’ve gone from being zero dollars under management back 15 years ago to over one billion dollars under management and administration — and that’s not just local, that’s international and Bahamian,” Longley said.

“That for me is a testament of what we can achieve as Bahamians.” Longley also emphasized the value of giving back. “One of the things that I'm so proud of is that back in 2018 we were able to donate to the University of The Bahamas an endowment of $250,000. You make money, but the thing is you have to be able to give back.” He added, “I value my staff. They’ve done a wonderful job. Without them , we could not have achieved what we’ve achieved.”

Prime Minister Philip Davis, while delivering the keynote address, praised Leno’s impact on the Bahamian economy and psyche: “Look at what you have done. You have changed the skyline of our capital — but more importantly, you have changed the expectations of a generation.” He continued, “You didn’t wait on luck. You didn’t wait on praise. You got to work and over 15 years you built something strong.”

“You started out with little but hope and aspiration — no shortcuts, no special treatment — just a belief, as you indicated, that if you stay the course, work with discipline, and keep your head high, you can build something that lasts,” Davis said, adding, “We celebrate your business, we celebrate doors. But we must also change the culture. We must celebrate people who build with integrity, who employ others, who take the long road when the easy one is tempting.”

Chairman Montgomery Braithwaite, who was part of Leno’s journey from the beginning, also shared heartfelt remarks during the vote of thanks. “As Chairman of Leno Corporate Services and Leno Trust, I believe that I have provided some guidance along the way — but make no mistake — what you see here today is the product of Sean’s vision, his determination, and the incredible team that surrounds him. This Centre is a tangible symbol of what happens when passion meets persistence, and when a small, nimble company rises to meet the needs of its clients with excellence.”

Braithwaite extended thanks to the company’s partners, employees and valued clients who have all played a meaningful role in helping build Leno into what it is today. “In a business like ours, where trust must be earned and credibility built over time, your support — your confidence — has made all the difference,” said Braithwaite.

Braithwaite also acknowledged the uphill battle the company faced. “Yes, there have been bumps along the road, but in the 15 years, there's a sense of satisfaction that we have, that the people who have invested with us, the people who have shown their trust in us, we've grown with them. And today, there's a sense of satisfaction that we have not disappointed. We have made some mistakes along the way, but generally, the investment, the confidence that was placed in Leno has been manifested in our success and their success.”

Vice President of Business Development and Client Relations Cleora Farquharson spoke with pride about the significance of Leno’s achievement. “It’s a testament to young Bahamian entrepreneurship and what we could do, not just on the domestic level but on an international level,” she said. “These 15 years are a culmination of all that dedication and hard work that was a distant dream 15 years previously — and now it’s a reality.” She added, “This edifice is a testament to vision, to those hard years of working. It’s a beautiful building. It’s state-of-the-art and I’m very, very proud to be a part of this.”

Board Director Khrystle Rutherford-Ferguson echoed that sentiment. “Leno has come a long way,” she said. “I'm just so happy to be a part of this venture and to lend my expertise in any way possible, because I really believe in the vision that Sean has set for Leno."

Rutherford-Ferguson added, “I think customer service separates Leno from its competitors. Not only customer service, but vision. Vision is very big. The good book says that without vision, the people perish. And it is very much true, because we see it all around. We see it on every level of this building. Not only is there the vision but the customer service and the staff. They're friendly and they're knowledgeable. I really believe in the product that Leno has here and that it delivers on a daily basis. In fact, I have investments here and my husband has investments here too. I am not just on the board to say that I'm a part of this, but we also put our funds here because we believe in this vision, and we know that it will continue to succeed and grow leaps and bounds. I'm very much looking forward to the next 15 years and beyond.”

Chief Operating Officer Andre White spoke to Leno’s ongoing commitment to service. “From the time that we started 15 years ago, we’ve had a very hands-on approach to dealing with our customers,” he said. “From the smallest customer in their college savings plan or individual retirement accounts to our private wealth clients — every single one of them is important to us.” White added, “We’ve grown from being an aspiring company to one that’s now at the pinnacle of its success — and we just see the growth continuing from this point on.”

The evening closed with fireworks, a Junkanoo rush-out, and fellowship as guests mingled and celebrated the momentous occasion.

Fidelity Bank Bahamas and Mastercard launch a credit card for SMEs, offering business solutions, fraud protection, and tools to track spending and manage finances effectively.

Fidelity Bank Bahamas Limited, in partnership with Mastercard, has launched a credit card designed specifically for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The partnership with Mastercard aims to provide SMEs with a powerful tool that goes beyond just a credit card—it's a comprehensive business solution. In addition to a mentorship and concierge program, a key feature is Mastercard 360, a platform that allows business owners to track customer spending habits, identify profitable areas, and avoid unnecessary expenses. This transforms the way businesses manage their finances, allowing them to work smarter, not harder.

Fidelity's Mastercard SME business credit card comes equipped with robust fraud protection measures. While fraud can occur, the structured use of this card helps create a clear business trail, which is essential for accountability. Additionally, it includes insurance protections for cash loss, further safeguarding business finances.

In The Bahamas, virtually every business qualifies as an SME by global standards. If you're a small business, whether you're just starting out or already generating significant revenue, this card is for you. Even if you're in the early stages—perhaps you've just received your business license—the Mastercard SME business credit card can still be an option. The key is to have a solid business plan and the ambition to grow. It’s about thinking big, even if your business is small.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The 13th Annual Eleuthera Business Outlook is set for Thursday, April 3rd, 2025, at the Hub in Rock Sound and Friday, April 4th, 2025, at Valentine’s Resort in Harbour Island.

This two-day event, under the theme “Prioritizing Inclusive Sustainable Growth,” will showcase the growing potential of Eleuthera, Harbour Island, and Spanish Wells, examining the opportunities and challenges the island faces as it continues to evolve.

Thomas Sands, Eleuthera businessman and Eleuthera Chamber of Commerce President notes that Eleuthera is experiencing positive growth. “In the past, we would have talked about recessions in Eleuthera, challenges in Eleuthera, and a lack of growth in particular areas. We are growing. Through most of the island of Eleuthera, there is growth. We’re very thankful to see that happen. There’s a lot of new opportunities evolving on the island of Eleuthera.”

However, with growth inevitably come challenges, and Sands emphasizes the need for preparation. “The level of growth has happened very quickly. Essentially, we were not prepared for it on several different levels. In terms of civil infrastructure, it would appear that in recent times, there is this recognition that there needs to be a solution. There needs to be a solution that is actioned quickly. In recent times, we’ve seen contracts for road construction. We’re seeing BPL step up to the plate and make the investment in manpower. They’ve also had a series of meetings in Eleuthera outlining their plan to upgrade not only the transmission but power generation and distribution, speaking about the reality of what the challenges were, and a solution to move forward.”

Sands also points to ongoing efforts to address water and sewage infrastructure needs, underscoring the importance of clear communication about where Eleuthera is heading. “It’s important for everyone to understand where we were, where we’re going, and what the needs will be,” he says.

Looking ahead, Sands says he is optimistic about the island’s future and its potential to diversify the economy of The Bahamas. “Eleuthera will be a significant growth market for the country, and investment must take place to ensure we can sustain that growth,” he asserts.

To seize these opportunities, Sands stresses the importance of understanding the data behind Eleuthera’s growth. “As a chamber, we believe it’s essential to have both government and investment data to help us understand where growth is headed and how we can position ourselves accordingly.”

Sands also highlights the diversity of economies within Eleuthera. “Eleuthera is a long island with several constituencies that feed into one another. South, Central, and North Eleuthera each have their own unique dynamics, but they’re all interconnected,” he adds. “You can drive from North Eleuthera to South Eleuthera and experience different landscapes, cultures, and communities along the way.”

The event will feature a cocktail reception on the evening of April 2nd, offering a social setting for visitors and presenters to mingle and prepare for the days ahead.

Day one in Rock Sound will focus on South and Central Eleuthera, with an emphasis on infrastructure investments and solutions. The following day in Harbour Island, discussions will center on the northern part of Eleuthera, including Spanish Wells and Harbour Island.

“Eleuthera, Spanish Wells, and Harbour Island are essentially one larger ecosystem with individual economies,” Sands explains. “We are excited to continue using this format, which allows us to address the unique challenges and opportunities of each region while acknowledging their interconnectedness.”

The Central Bank of the Bahamas hosts its 41st Art Exhibition, "All Together Now," showcasing diverse artistic expressions and celebrating creativity post-pandemic.

The Central Bank of the Bahamas opened its doors to showcase extraordinary works of art, celebrating creativity and cultural expression. The 41st Art Exhibition is not just an event; it represents a dedication to the arts and a commitment to fostering talent within our community. Under the theme "All Together Now," the exhibition not only highlights established artists but also fosters an environment where new talents can emerge and be celebrated.

"For us, this is a coming out of sorts," Central Bank governor John Rolle shares. "The pandemic undoubtedly disrupted our annual exhibition tradition, but even during those challenging times, the art continued to thrive online. Now, we find ourselves at a thrilling juncture where we can once again showcase these works for the public to enjoy."

This exhibition represents not just a return but a transformation. Governor Rolle notes that prior to the pandemic, the art exhibition was predominantly focused on paintings. However, this year, we are witnessing a remarkable evolution as it embraces various forms of artistic expression—including music, poetry, and videography. This transformation is not just about diversifying art forms; it signifies a broader reach and a greater level of engagement with artists across The Bahamas. The competition now attracts talent from all islands, fostering an exceptional response from students and emerging artists alike.
